2022 iPhone SE will be based on iPhone XR

Looking ahead at the next generation of iPhone SE, the third rendition of Apple‘s budget phone is expected to release in early 2022. According to reports, rumors suggested that the iPhone SE 3 will be dropped closer to the Spring season. Unlike its predecessor that borrows the design of the iPhone 8, the new SE iteration will adopt the exterior design of the iPhone XR from 2018, equipped with a 6.1-inch display, front notch design, 5G connectivity, and the A15 chip.

The touch ID button is replaced with a side fingerprint scanner, while there will also be Face ID recognition. Rumors suggest that the iPhone SE 3 will be priced slightly above the $400 USD price point similar to the second generation. The SE, which has a classic design language and the only front fingerprint recognition, is still favored by some consumers. It seems that Apple does not intend to give up, and iterative models are revealed to be released next spring. According to the latest news, the iPhone SE 3 will be Apple’s last mobile phone equipped with an LCD display. For those who have no love for OLED, there are few opportunities left. However, it was said earlier that the iPhone SE 3 is still the iPhone 8 model, that is, 4.7-inch screen, front Touch ID , but the latest rumor is that it is based on the iPhone XR, equipped with side fingerprints, of course, does not rule out the front Face ID. A new report from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today reiterated expectations for the next-gen iPhone SE. Kuo believes the two big upgrades will be 5G and an upgraded processor, with the new entry-level iPhone coming in Spring 2022. Kuo reiterates that the 2022 iPhone SE will have a similar design as the existing 4.7-inch iPhone SE.

LG Teases Its Rollable Phone Again

LG is once again teasing its rollable phone. While we’ve seen brief hints in the past, at CES today, LG provided the best look at the device so far. Named LG Rollable, the device has what the company calls a “unique resizable screen” that transforms from a phone into a small tablet. The screen slides in and out of place to extend its surface area.

It’s merely a concept right now, as part of LG’s “Explorer Project” experiments, and we still don’t know exactly what technology LG is using or the size of the expandable display. LG has previously used its Explorer Project to introduce its LG Wing smartphone, with a wild rotating design and two OLED displays. It’s still not clear whether LG’s Rollable phone will ever make it to market, but the company has now branded this experiment so it seems more likely we’ll see an LG Rollable in the future. Other companies are also investigating rollable phone displays. TCL showed off a number of future phone concepts last year, and Oppo also demonstrated a concept device with an expandable OLED display. Phone manufacturers have yet to move beyond the concept and experiment phase with their rollable phones, though.

The Best Black Friday Deals You Can Get Right Now

The majority of Black Friday 2020 deals will launch the day after Thanksgiving (November 26th) in the US as usual, but the pandemic has shaken things up in yet another way. The best deals will be happening online, with fewer in-person sales for the sake of safety. Better yet, some of those great deals are already available, so you can get started on your holiday gift (or personal) shopping. With this post, we’re rounding up the best early Black Friday deals from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Adorama, B&H Photo, Newegg, and anywhere else we find deals you should know about.

Headphones

I love seeing this $72 off deal on Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones (pictured above). It’s happening again at Amazon, matching the lowest price we’ve seen yet. This model of headphones released for $350 in August, improving on the excellent audio quality, sound-dampening noise cancellation, and long battery life of the XM3 from 2018. This newer model doesn’t bring revolutionary changes in either category, but adding multipoint Bluetooth connectivity and auto-pausing sensors makes the XM4 worth seeking out.

Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Plus, the best wireless earbuds for most people, pictured in a woman’s ear.
Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Plus wireless earbuds are down to just $110 at Amazon and Best Buy. This is the best price we’ve seen for this model, which usually costs $150 outside of any discounts. Compared to the standard Galaxy Buds, this upgraded model that launched alongside the Galaxy S20 series of phones has improved sound quality, microphones, and battery life.

Laptops / tablets

Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 is the best Chromebook you can currently buy, and it’s $80 off its normal price. Normally $629, it’s now $549. That might not seem like much, but it’s a good value if you want a high-end Chromebook experience, with a 3:2 aspect ratio display, a decent processor, and 128GB of SSD storage.

Misc. deals

The Apple Watch SE was already the most affordable Watch that Apple made at $279, but it’s even cheaper at Amazon, Walmart, and Target. You can score the 40mm GPS version for $230 or the larger 44mm Watch for $260 at Amazon or Walmart. Each size looks similar to the more expensive Series 6 but lacks the always-on display and a few other features. The Apple Watch SE aligns more with the Series 5 in terms of specs, but at $230, it’s a fantastic value. Here’s an in-depth post on how the SE differs from other recent Apple Watch models.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is also cheaper than usual at Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Normally $400 for the 40mm GPS model, it’s down to $350 for the first time for Black Friday. Previously, just a $20 drop was noteworthy.

Peak Design has kicked off its “Super Massive Black Friday sale” with sizeable discounts on bags and tripods. It might be tough to imagine when you might next need a durable backpack that can fit a lot of gadgets within, but the company’s “Everyday” lineup of bags is 20 percent off. Its bigger “Travel” bags are also discounted.

If you’re into photography, Peak Design’s Travel Tripod and a few accessories that are compatible with it are cheaper than usual.

Gaming

If you’re having trouble narrowing down what games you want, why not get several? Target is hosting a “get three for the price of two” deal on video game purchases even for newer titles like Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, to name a few. The list goes on, though one thing that isn’t eligible are first-party Sony games for the PS5, like the Demon’s Souls remake, but you can pickup Godfall, which is available on Sony’s next-gen console (and on PC.) Even Cyberpunk 2077, a game coming out next month is eligible for this promotion.

Watch Dogs: Legion, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s hack-anything, open-world game, is down to $50 at Amazon, that’s $10 off, while it’s not the lowest we have seen this game go down, this title recently came out and this is still a good discount. What makes this deal even better is that each version will net you an upgrade to the Xbox Series X / S or PS5 copies for free. Even if you don’t have much interest in the game, it’s an affordable way to check out what impressive ray-tracing graphics look like on the new console hardware.

PC upgrades

If you want 2TB of fast storage for your PC, Samsung’s 2TB 970 Evo Plus NVMe SSD is $250 at Newegg and Amazon, beating the lowest price by about $40. Over the summer, the price was steady at $350. A PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSD like this will fit in only certain kinds of motherboards (so check before you buy). Alternatively, it can also make for a very fast USB-C drive if you get an M.2 enclosure for it. Either route you take, you’ll get a lot of speedy storage.

Stay tuned for more deals.

Here’s our first look at Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro

Huawei announced the Mate 40 Pro yesterday, and now we have one in hand. It might not be easy to recommend Huawei phones outside of China, since the Trump administration’s targeted sanctions have prevented it working with US companies like Google, but devices like the P40 Pro Plus and last year’s Mate 30 Pro have had hardware as impressive as anything else on the global smartphone market.

The situation shouldn’t be any different with the new Mate 40 Pro. It’s likely to be Huawei’s most advanced device yet even if there are still questions over the extent to which the company is actually able to manufacture it. I thought the Mate 30 Pro was the best-looking phone released in 2019, and the Mate 40 Pro builds on that design. The unit I have is in the “Mystic Silver” colorway, which Huawei is promoting the most heavily. It’s a lot more unusual than the name makes it sound the back is frosted glass, but there’s a kaleidoscopic effect where the phone shimmers different colors depending on the light. It looks great. The camera module is circular, as it was last year, but this time the lenses are arranged in a ring around the Leica logo. I think I preferred the Mate 30 Pro’s two-tone glossy effect a little better, but Huawei says this year’s model was inspired by a black hole, so make of that what you will. This is still an attractive device from behind. Around the front, the notch has been jettisoned in favor of a double-wide hole punch cutout for the dual selfie cameras. The OLED display is a little bigger this year at 6.76 inches, and it still has the 88-degree “waterfall” curves on the edges, which Huawei calls a “horizon” display. These edges mean the power button on the side is still pushed back further to the rear than on most other phones. Unlike the Mate 30 Pro, however, Huawei has found space for physical volume buttons this time, which should be an improvement in usability. Overall the Mate 40 Pro is looking like another physically and technically impressive Huawei flagship phone, and I’m looking forward to finding out what the company has managed to achieve particularly with the camera and the new Kirin 9000 processor. The software, of course, will be another matter entirely. Stay tuned for a full review.

First PS5 hands-on videos show off hardware and games, but no UI

Sony has invited a number of Japanese publications and YouTubers to get a closer look at the PlayStation 5. It’s the first time we’ve seen the PS5 hardware outside of leaked images from Taiwan’s National Communications Commission. A variety of publications have now published detailed hands-on images and videos of the PS5, providing a more realistic look at how big the console is and gameplay of titles like Astro’s Playroom and Godfall. 4gamer has published photos of the PS5 standing both vertically and horizontally, demonstrating how the stand works in either position to hold the console in place. Some photos also show how the PS5 will cool itself, and 4gamer notes that it wasn’t able to hear the fan inside the console or feel much heat exhausting from it during its limited time with the hardware.

Although these PS5 previews are clearly in a very limited environment, one of 4gamer’s photos does reveal a mysterious silver latch or bolt hidden inside the top-right section of the PS5. Sony has said PS5 owners will be able to expand storage with regular SSD drives in this new console, but we’ve yet to see how this will work in reality. This latch could be how you access the ability to expand PS5 storage, with it presumably allowing the side to be removed. There’s no other obvious way to slot an SSD into the PS5, but we’re still waiting on Sony to confirm how it will handle expandable storage. We’ve known for weeks that the PS5 is the biggest console in modern history, and Dengeki Online helps put that into perspective with a shot of the PS5 next to a large TV. It’s clear if you want the PS5 to sit vertically in a TV stand then you might need to clear some room, or use the console horizontally. The PS5 laying flat looks like it should fit into most TV stands. Most of the videos don’t show the PS5 in too much detail, as they’re largely focused on gameplay. One from Famitsu’s YouTube channel does offer a brief look at the hardware up close. Alongside the console itself, these Japanese publications and YouTubers also got a closer look at the new DualSense controller.

This new design includes haptic feedback (replacing the old rumble technology) and adaptive triggers that can adjust the resistance of the triggers for different gameplay effects. Sony has even included a microphone, alongside a USB-C. We’ve seen Sony demonstrate the PS5’s pack-in game, Astro’s Playroom, a number of times before, and the company has used it again during these hands-on videos to highlight the DualSense controller features. AV watch also reports that the confirm button on the PS5 will be X instead of O going forward, which means Japanese players are going to have to retrain their body’s muscle memory to get used to that significant change. There’s little else to report on the controller just yet, but 4gamer does provide a good look at the different colorful LEDs on the DualSense. None of the videos of publications were able to show the PlayStation 5 dashboard or UI elements, unfortunately. These remain a mystery, despite Sony teasing what appeared to be the boot experience or main PS5 dashboard all the way back in June. Sony has also promised a fully redesigned PS5 dashboard with “no pixel untouched.” We’re still waiting to see exactly what Sony does with the new PS5 UI, and hopefully we’ll get a glimpse at it before the November 12th launch date. Elsewhere there’s also a lot of gameplay of Astro’s Playroom, Godfall, and even Balan Wonderworld. We’ve also seen plenty of this game footage before, and none of the previews seem to dig too deep on SSD performance or load times for games. All three games look as smooth as you’d expect on the PS5, but it’s disappointing not to see more Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay given that title looks like the perfect demonstration for the PS5’s speedy SSD. Either way, you can find the latest PS5 gameplay in the video below. These limited PS5 previews don’t answer all the questions we still have around the PS5, and we’re hoping Sony will start providing some answers soon. We’re still waiting to hear about the PS5 dashboard, how you use expandable storage in the console, and just how well Sony’s backward compatibility for PS4 games works on the new PS5. There’s still more than a month to go until the PS5 launch on November 12th, so Sony has plenty of time to reveal a lot more about its next-gen console. For now, these early previews have provided a closer much-needed look at the PS5.

You can now sign up to test Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR

The new Microsoft Flight Simulator is an immersive beast of a PC game, and we can only imagine how immersive it might get in VR but you might not have to imagine much longer, because Microsoft has just opened signups (via Eurogamer) for a closed beta of the virtual reality experience. There are quite a few requirements if you want to be considered, though. Not only do you have to own the game, have a Windows Mixed Reality headset, be a registered Microsoft Flight Simulator “Insider” and sign an NDA, you’ll need a slightly beefier PC than the base game with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 or better sporting 8GB of VRAM, as well as 16GB of system memory. And, you’ll need to prove your PC qualifies by submitting your DxDiag (press your Windows start button, type “dxdiag”, hit Enter) so Microsoft can confirm those specs and that your system isn’t prone to BSODs or other major system errors. (The DxDiag file is basically just an inventory of your system, but it does also list recent application crashes.)

Intriguingly, it doesn’t look like you’ll need the HP Reverb G2, the specific headset that Microsoft originally said would get first dibs on the game. Any Windows Mixed Reality headset will apparently do to start, which should be neat for those who got deep discounts on items like the Lenovo Explorer and Samsung Odyssey over the past couple of years. The company isn’t saying when the closed beta will begin, but it had previously promised a free VR update this fall, so it probably won’t be long. If you’ve got an Oculus, HTC, or other VR headset, there’ll be a second wave of closed beta for other devices as well. It’s not surprising Microsoft might want to be cautious with the VR rollout, because the game initially tended to eat powerful gaming PCs for lunch. Even our Nvidia RTX 3080 wasn’t enough to run it at full bore, partly because we hadn’t paired it with a fast enough CPU. That said, we’ve seen some framerate improvement in recent updates, so perhaps VR won’t be a tremendous stretch this holiday. And maybe it’ll give you more time to find a flight stick.

Fortnite is getting Nvidia RTX ray tracing support on computer

Nvidia on Tuesday announced that Epic Games is bringing real-time ray tracing to the PC version of Fortnite. The announcement came as part of the company’s Ampere graphics card live stream, where we expect Nvidia to show off the RTX 3090 graphics card later today.

Fortnite will support DLSS 2.0, Nvidia’s feature that uses AI to boost frame rates while keeping the ray tracing effects boosted to their maximum. The video clip above shows some high-fidelity surface reflections.
When ray tracing launched with the RTX 20-series, Nvidia struggled to attract large-scale games to adopt it right away. But support is growing, and it doesn’t get much larger in scale than Fortnite one of the most popular games in the world. Tune into Nvidia’s live stream for more announcements.

Google launches Google Kids Space

Google has announced Kids Space, a new mode for Android tablets that includes kid-friendly features and content, and parental controls. It’s making its debut on Lenovo’s new Tab M10 HD Gen 2, also unveiled today. Google says it’s coming to more devices in the future. There are a number of tablets out there that offer content specifically for children, such as Amazon’s Fire HD Kids Edition line. There are also various third-party parental control apps that families can download. Kids Space stands out in that it will be built into a number of Android tablets not just tablets designed for kids. This is a key distinction in the current tablet market, according to Lenovo. Per the company’s research, tablets often function as shared devices among household members, and many kids start preferring grown-up-looking products at a fairly young age.

A representative told me that Lenovo “didn’t want a kids tablet that looked like a toy.” Instead, it’s marketing the Tab M10 HD Gen 2 as a product for families to share. Users create separate profiles with their own settings so children can use Kids Space while parents can browse as normal. Within Kids Space, children can access a library including apps, games, videos, and books. Google says it worked with children and parents to curate the content “through the lens of child development.” The offerings, the company says, are “enriching, high-quality, and trustworthy.” They’re meant for kids under 9. The interface is colorful and cute, and looks easy to navigate. Kids can sort content by topic animals, princesses, cooking, vehicles, homework help, etc. and can swap between tabs labeled “Make,” “Play,” “Read,” and “Watch” in addition to the home screen. They can also create an avatar for themselves, customizing various characteristics including outfits and backpacks. Parents can add additional apps through the Google Play store, which could be helpful as school gets under way. Kids Space is a follow-up to Google’s Family Link, a parental control app for all Android devices, which allows parents to create and monitor Google accounts for their kids. You can set regulations on screen time, select what apps they can use, remotely lock their devices, and keep tabs on their activity. Parents will be able to use Family Link controls to manage their children’s use of Kids Space. “Parents can extend the experience and customize it even more for themselves,” Google told me. Google doesn’t use any data from children’s accounts to target ads (and Lenovo says it doesn’t collect any either). “Join us in our journey as we continue to create productive and healthy experiences for kids that adapt to the evolving world and needs of your family,” says Google in its press release.

Tiktok And Twitter Reportedly Have Had Talks About A Deal

Twitter has had preliminary discussions about a “combination” with TikTok, the Wall Street Journal reported, making the social media platform the latest possible suitor for the popular video-sharing app. As the WSJ notes, it’s not clear whether Twitter would pursue a possible acquisition of TikTok, and any such deal would have big obstacles. The biggest challenge to any deal is the Trump administration’s executive order from August 6th, which bars TikTok parent company ByteDance from handling transactions in the US.

The order takes effect within 45 days. The administration considers the Chinese-owned app a potential security threat, despite no evidence indicating ByteDance or TikTok has ever shared Americans’ data with the Chinese government. TikTok has said it plans to challenge the Trump administration’s order. And then there’s Microsoft, the only company so far to publicly acknowledge it was in talks with TikTok owner ByteDance for a possible acquisition. The WSJ says Twitter would be considered a long-shot in a bid for TikTok, with Microsoft the likely front runner in any deal. Twitter is much smaller than Microsoft, and the WSJ’s sources say the social platform could be likely to face less antitrust scrutiny than Microsoft. But Twitter also doesn’t have as much money as the software giant for a possible purchase. Microsoft said in an August 2nd blog post that its CEO Satya Nadella had spoken to President Trump about a possible TikTok acquisition, which would include TikTok operations in the US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Microsoft said it expected its talks to wrap by September 15th. Any deal with Twitter would involve TikTok’s US operations, according to the WSJ. Twitter declined to comment. A TikTok spokesperson said the company does not comment on market rumors.

Samsung And Microsoft Will Let You Run Galaxy Note 20 Application On Windows 10 Pc

Samsung and Microsoft announced at last year’s Galaxy Unpacked that they would be forming a closer partnership to help Android and Windows work better together. At today’s Galaxy Unpacked, the two companies revealed new integrations between their two ecosystems including a way to run apps from your Galaxy Note 20 on your Windows 10 PC. Here’s a GIF from Microsoft showing a Windows 10 PC running WhatsApp and Instagram side by side from a Galaxy Note 20:

You’ll only be able to use one app at a time on your PC at first, but Microsoft says that you’ll be able to run multiple apps, as is shown in the GIF, sometime in November. You’ll also be able to pin apps to your Windows taskbar or Start menu so you can access them more quickly. The two companies are also making it easier to sync information between your Galaxy Note 20 and the Microsoft 365 suite of apps. Notes from your Samsung Notes app will be able to sync with the OneNote app and with your OneNote feed in Outlook on the web, for example. Microsoft says this feature is “coming soon.” And Samsung Reminders will be able to sync across Microsoft To Do, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.

SpaceX capsule and NASA Make History crew make first splashdown in 45 years

Two NASA astronauts are back on Earth after their space capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Pensacola, Fla. The last time any NASA astronauts came home by splashing down was in 1975 and back then, they were in an Apollo space vehicle. This time, the astronauts were in a white, bell-shaped capsule owned by SpaceX. The success of their test flight, to the International Space Station and back, is a milestone for SpaceX, the first private company to send people to the outpost.

Astronauts Set To Return To Earth In First U.S. Splashdown In Decades Science Astronauts Set To Return To Earth In First U.S. Splashdown In Decades The company has been taking cargo to and from the station for years. This flight with people on board was the final test for SpaceX's crew system to be certified by NASA as "operational" for future astronaut missions. That means the U.S. once again has its own ability to put people in orbit and return them safely. Since retiring its space shuttles in 2011, NASA has had to buy seats for its astronauts on Russian spaceships. NASA can now rely on an American space taxi that takes off from Florida, and it's already assigning astronauts to future SpaceX missions including Megan McArthur, who happens to be married to one of the just-returned astronauts, Bob Behnken. Behnken and his crewmate Doug Hurley blasted off in their SpaceX Dragon capsule on May 30.

Their flight marked the first time people had been launched to orbit from U.S. soil in almost a decade, and they spent two months living and working on board the station. Then they climbed back into their SpaceX capsule, which they had dubbed "Endeavour," and undocked from the station on Saturday at 7:34 p.m. ET. They spent the night orbiting the Earth, and then a deorbit burn set their capsule on an irreversible course to re-enter the atmosphere. Video beamed down from the capsule showed the pair in their sleek black-and-white suits, monitoring their progress on large blue touch screens. Meanwhile, at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif., mission controllers wore masks at their workstations, due to COVID-19. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk was there, watching the screens and speaking from time to time with SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. Off the coast of Pensacola, a recovery ship waited.

Though Hurricane Isaias was headed up the eastern coast of the state, mission managers had judged the weather in the Gulf of Mexico acceptable for the splashdown. The two astronauts' communications blacked out, as expected, for several nerve-wracking minutes during their fiery reentry. But then they were back in contact, as the first views of their capsule appeared on video. It dropped through the sky at around 400 miles per hour before two parachutes emerged to slow it down. New Spaceship Prepares To Blast Off And Make History Science New Spaceship Prepares To Blast Off And Make History Then, four white-and-reddish orange parachutes billowed out, slowing it down even more. The two astronauts braced for impact as their capsule, bearing scorch marks, hit the calm seas with a big splash. Two fast boats raced towards it, as its parachutes drifted down to the water. Cheering and clapping could be heard in the background as Mission Control told the astronauts, "welcome back to planet Earth and thanks for flying SpaceX." Going forward, NASA wants to rely on commercial space taxis for routine flights to and from the orbiting outpost — while the government agency focuses on developing vehicles for a return to the moon. And SpaceX has plans to take other paying customers to space, including on a trip around the moon and back.

Google Stadia tests 4G and 5G Streaming

You can now play games on Google’s Stadia cloud gaming service on your Android phone over 4G and 5G connections, though you have to opt in to an “experiment,” Google announced today (via 9to5Google). Since the service’s launch in November 2019, you’ve only been able to play Stadia games on your phone over Wi-Fi that is, unless you tricked Stadia into playing over a cellular connection by tethering a laptop to a phone or hotspot.

If you want to opt in to the experiment, open up the Stadia app on your Android phone, tap on your avatar, select Experiments, and then “Use Mobile Data,” according to Google. Sean found that when he played Stadia over a 90Mbps LTE connection for his review, “the experience ranged from totally playable to annoyingly stuttery.” But that was all the way back in November 2019, and it’s unclear if Google has made changes to make things run smoothly more consistently when playing over a cellular network, especially when it’s a direct connection (as opposed to a tethered one). Today’s news is one of many notable updates to Stadia since its launch, including bringing the service to practically any Android phone, allowing the Stadia controller to work wirelessly with Android devices, and launching a free version of the service.

United Arab Emirates launches its first mission to Mars

The United Arab Emirates' Hope spacecraft launched Sunday on a journey to Mars. Why it matters: This mission, which launched on an H2-A rocket from Japan, marks the UAE's first mission to Mars. It kicks off the first of three missions to the Red Planet this summer, with China and the U.S. to follow in the coming weeks. Details: The Hope probe is designed to orbit Mars and gather data about the world's weather from above, filling in gaps in scientific knowledge left by previous missions. The probe's instruments will be able to track the day-to-night cycle of the planet's weather on a global scale.

The UAE sees this home-grown mission as a way of fostering scientific and technical expertise in the country and in the Middle East as a whole. Hope will now fly through space until it reaches its orbit around Mars in about seven months. Background: The Hope probe isn't the UAE's first foray into space, and it isn't the end of its ambitions. In 2019, the first Emirati astronaut, Hazzaa Al Mansoori launched on a mission to the International Space Station. The UAE is also expected to launch a mission to the Moon in 2022. The big picture: Space has become a marker of geopolitical status in recent years. Smaller nations have been able to send their own satellites to orbit due to lowered launch and development costs. But even so, Mars missions are usually reserved for only those space agencies with the most resources and support. The Hope mission if it successfully orbits Mars vaults the UAE into that small, elite club.

Microsoft announces new Windows 10 Design

Microsoft is introducing a new Windows 10 Start menu design that will de-emphasize its Live Tiles. The software giant first hinted at the refreshed design earlier this year, and it’s arriving for Windows 10 testers today. “We are freshening up the Start menu with a more streamlined design that removes the solid color backplates behind the logos in the apps list and applies a uniform, partially transparent background to the tiles,” explains Microsoft in a blog post.

Essentially, the reduction in the color of the blocky tiled interface on the Start menu will simplify it slightly and make it easier to scan for the apps you use on a daily basis. It’s a subtle change, but it certainly makes the Start menu look a little less chaotic and avoids many tiles sharing a similar blue color. Alongside an updated Start menu, the latest Windows 10 build includes some big changes to Alt-Tab. “Beginning with today’s build, all tabs open in Microsoft Edge will start appearing in Alt-Tab, not just the active one in each browser window,” explains Microsoft. This seems like a change that might be a little confusing for veteran Windows users, but Microsoft is thankfully allowing you to switch back to the classic Alt-Tab experience.

Microsoft experimented with Alt-Tab changes in Windows 10 builds in the past, back when the company was planning to add tabs to every app. There will likely be a lot of feedback around any Alt-Tab changes here, especially if Microsoft plans to turn this on by default when its next major Windows 10 update ships later this year. Microsoft is also making some smaller changes with this new Windows 10 build. The default taskbar appearance will also now be more personalized with the Xbox app pinned for Xbox Live users or Your Phone pinned for Android users. This will be limited to new account creation on a PC or first login, so existing taskbar layouts will remain unchanged. Notifications now include an X in the top right corner to allow you to quickly dismiss them, and Microsoft is also improving its Settings app in Windows 10. Links that would typically push you toward the system part of the legacy Control Panel system page will now direct you to the About page in Settings. This will now house the more advanced controls typically found in that system section of the Control Panel, and Microsoft is promising “there will be more improvements coming that will further bring Settings closer to Control Panel.”

Microsoft’s second next-gen Xbox Update

A leaked Microsoft document recently hinted at the company’s second next-gen Xbox, and now rumors suggest it will be fully revealed in August. Eurogamer reports that Microsoft had originally planned to unveil the console, codenamed “Lockhart,” in June. Microsoft has now reportedly moved these plans to August, and Eurogamer claims the console will be named the Xbox Series S. Microsoft has been working on this second cheaper next-gen Xbox console for months.

A Microsoft document, leaked last week, shed some further light on the company’s plans. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X devkit, codenamed “Dante,” allows game developers to enable a special Lockhart mode that has a profile of the performance that Microsoft wants to hit with this second console. While we’ve been reporting this performance includes a slightly underclocked CPU, The Verge has seen additional documents that suggest Lockhart will actually have the same speed CPU as the Xbox Series X. The Lockhart console will also include 7.5GB of usable RAM, and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance. The Xbox Series X includes 13.5GB of usable RAM and targets 12 teraflops of GPU performance for comparison. If the reports are accurate, Microsoft could choose August to unveil this second next-gen Xbox alongside pricing for the Xbox Series X. This second console is designed as a more affordable option, with 1080p and 1440p monitors in mind. Microsoft would have to detail some type of pricing alongside its Lockhart reveal, and it’s reasonable to assume it will be heavily tied to the Xbox All Access subscription. Xbox All Access is currently priced at $19.99 for an Xbox One S All Digital Edition subscription that includes Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass). Microsoft is also bundling its Project xCloud game streaming technology into Xbox Game Pass later this year, so a subscription next-gen Xbox console could be appealing to those who don’t need the more powerful Xbox Series X option.
