What Does The “D” Stand For In One Piece?

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all aware of the middle letter “D” that is is often present in the name of certain characters in One Piece. These are usually some very important people, and of course, Monkey D Luffy is one of them. But, what exactly is this “D”? This is extremely confusing as around 850+ chapters in, we don’t know anything about it. Today, I’ve come across a theory regarding what D could mean. So let’s begin. In an SBS, Oda revealed that the D initial would be revealed later in the story.
Question: In “Monkey D. Luffy”, what does the D stand for?! Is it “donburi” (a bowl) or maybe “daibutsu” (giant Buddha statue)? Or maybe…!! I’m really interested. Please tell me.
Oda: I’ve gotten a ridiculous number of these letters… I’ve gotten a lot, but I cannot answer that question. I can’t answer it yet… Please just read it as “D”and don’t think anything about it, for now.

The D therefore MUST be short for something and NOT just a D. So far we know,
The D’s are the descendants of the Ancient Kingdom, who fought the Alliance(world government) during the void century, and were eventually destroyed. The initial D was created so that the descendants of the AK could identify/find other descendants despite having been forced to hide and spread themselves across the world in order to survive. The initial was originally supposed to be “Secret”, however, over the generations many D families forgot this like the Monkey D and Gol D family. People of the AK, were most likely spiritually similar to Luffy/ Garp/ Roger/ Ace etc. For the most part.

This is speculation, but I believe the answer to this question allows for a vital assumption to me made. If the D stood for any random word that would not indicate the D’s relation to the AK, there would be no need to use an initial, and they could have used the full word. If this is true, than the D has to stand for something that would indicate that the D’s are related to the AK. This is why the D originally was attempted to be a secret initial. Note, this is not necessarily true. They could have just used the letter D because it was easy to remember, or just because they felt like it. However, I believe it far more likely the D refers to an important historical word related to the AK. So, there is a belief that the D, should be read as the same in both English and Japanese. I agree. The problem is that I can not read or speak Japanese, so rather than post any ideas about what I think the letter may actually stand for, i’m going to instead define what I think it may symbolically mean. For example; The Japanese word for Devil would be Akuma. Since Akuma would start with an A and not a D, many reject this possibility. The D is most likely to be related to the words “Devil” or ”Demon”. Based on what I have found, it is most likely a word that symbolizes “Devil” or “Demon” etc.

1. Zoro rhetorically ask’s whether or not Luffy is, “the offspring of the devil” in chapter 5. What kind of awesome forshadowing would it be for Oda to have dropped the hint that the D. meaning Devil in chapter 5.
2. Rosinante refers to this family as the “natural enemy of God”.
It’s important to understand what Rosinante likely means when he says “God”. This almost has to be a reference to the CD belief that they are God’s. The AK and the founders of the world government fought during the void century and the world government won the war.
So if the descendants of the founders of the world government call themselves “Gods”, it’s appropriate for the descendants of the AK to be referred to as “God’s natural enemy”. In other words, they could be symbolically called “Devils” and/or “Demons”.
Interestingly, Nami says the same thing about Luffy, when he fights against Enel.
While it’s true that Nami isn’t talking about all the D’s, we can’t forget that Luffy seems to be the epitome of this lineage. This in combination with Rosinante’s comments is extremely convincing. Oda wants us to know that they are in opposition of “God”.
That aside. Remember Nico Robin, and her epithet put forward by the World Government?
Yep, Nico Robin is known as, “the Devil Child”. For almost 900 years, it seems that reading the Poneglyphs created by the AK has been illegal.
The only known instance of anybody being able to decipher the markings on the Poneglyphs came 22 years ago, when the scholars of Ohara attempted to uncover the history of the void century. The only known survivor of the Oharans is Nico Robin, also known by the epithet “Devil Child”. Perhaps the world government thinks that only a “Devil” would be able to read the Poneglyphs.
So how/why could the D. Symbolically mean “Devil”, “Demon”?
If I had to hazard a guess, the term “devil” was bestowed upon the AK by the world government, and the descendants of these people use the first initial of the term, almost as a joke, to help identify their lineage.
Since these “devils” created and used the ability giving fruits (which I believe they possessed as a specialty), it would make sense for the world government to call them “devil” fruits. I say as a joke, because it’s obvious the D’s are not the evil ones. I think using “Devil” symbolically as their way of identifying each other is their way of saying, “We don’t care what you call us, or what derogatory names you give us. The only thing that matters is the truth.”
Final Conclusion:
I think it’s most likely the D is short for something that relates to or is symbolic for “Demon” or “Devil”. There is so much evidence i’m willing to go so far as to say, this is what everyone should expect it to be!
